Our Winter Water Hole:

That little shack out on the ice of the Mackenzie river is where this town gets their water supply from in the winter. I have to admit, it is nicer water.. more clear and doesn't have the touch of yellow to it as it did before.

Don't bring white clothes to the North unless you want it to be yellow when you leave.

Unbelievable Skies -

My days off lately have been dull, so Monday when I woke up to see clear skies (even though working nights) I got up, and went out. Sunrise currently starts at 1215 and the sunset at 1505. It was so beautiful out. When you only have 2.5hrs of daylight at the present, you really need to enjoy the time you have. And get some Vitamin D. The pictures do not do the sky justice. I can see why people stay in the North!

Scrapbooking Started

That is right, I stock piled all my supplies before I left so I could create my Northern Scrapboook. And I have. The good thing is, I have found people with the love of scrapbooking too. Lindsay and I have been busy..

Cannot wait to share the memories with everyone when I get home.. Until then I will keep the pages going

It's saturday night, and we are not at the Trapper. That is right, we decided to have a movie, games night. We actually did not watch a movie, instead we drank wine (just a warning stay away from the pink stuff) and watched Dr Ho sell something that is suppose to help massage your neck on the Home Shopping Channel. No we did not all rush out to purchase one. There really are some suckers out there. I was not going to be the 859th customer to purchase the three layered horseshoe shapped picece of rubber! Our night was a hoot. Scene it TV game is a wonderful game. Lots of fun and great laughs. Eat, drink, play and watch Dr Ho night- a blast!

Again Watch out for the pink wine... not good I tell you.

Hoarfrost- It's everywhere. And its beautiful. It is crystalline structures that grow from water vapor evaporated from liquid droplets suspended in the air. Once hore-frost crystals form, they can remain for as long as the conditions exist in their favour. Again I learned all this from co-worker SHEILA, one smart and very respected lady on her knowledge of the land and country.

SHOPPING IN INUVIK

This is as good as it gets. Winter Craft Sale. People from all the communities Holman, Tuk, Norman Wells, Tsiigehtchic, Aklavik, Paulatuk, Colville Lake etc come in with their home-made crafts, baking etc. Beautiful fur mitts, Parka's, mukluks, slippers, carvings, paintings, and pictures etc. Beading is a huge art around the community. Beautiful slippers with beaded flowers or designs were everywhere. And the fur mitts, rabbit, muscrat, beaver, fox etc.. It's no Mall but it was just as good.

I have been waiting about 1 month for this very day

I was like a kid in a candy store!

A Crazy Week for Me!

This week turned out to be absolutely crazy around here. It all started Thursday at work. A busy day that even turned busier. I think about 3 pregnant mothers came in complaining of cramping. Hooking them up to the monitor, lead us to find out 1 of three was well on her way. I not being overly comfortable with Labour and delivery YET, had my sidekick another nurse T accompany me. We delivered a beautiful little baby Girl at 1958 that night. It is an experience to know that you were the first person to hold a brand new babe and see them take their first breath of air. This little one gave us a little trouble respiratory wise in the beginning and I was just thanking my lucky stars that I had such a great nurse with me to teach me and guide me in her care. Just to let you know, she is doing wonderfully now. So my 12.5 hr day of work turned into a 15.5 hr day, with myself crawling into bed at midnight, just to get up and go back for 7:30 the next day. There was no going to Nats for bingo tonight.

Friday was even busier. Crazy busy actually. We had one patient in the state of psycosis. I halled him out of a taxi cab as he was talking to someone not even there, along with other places we found him in. Funny, until he went sour. Again that night, I was the nurse to deliver a brand new baby girl. 8lbs 13 oz. Beautiful once again. There are alot of firsts in Inuvik. Bathing a brand new baby was one of them. She sure was a slippery little one. What a great 2 days of experience in the Labour Room. Lets just hope they don't think I am changing my profession to Labour and Delivery.

And we Start the Search for our Christmas tree. I think it will be a Charlie Brown one for sure this year. Everyday it seems more and more like Christmas. I think because we have been surrounded by snow for quite some time now, it is hard to think we are not there yet. Ah don't want to rush a good thing. Everyone is invited to our house for Christmas. Who's coming!

Willie is sporting the new Northern Mascara. Can you see the ice crystals on her eyelashes. It was so neat. We had so much fun outside this day. It was cold, but if you dress for it, You will Survive.

Update:

Our 2 Month Anniversay North of 60 has just passed. I cannot believe it. Today as per the weather network, we are sitting at -14. We are to get to a low of -28. AH, that is cold. It feels cold, but if you bundle up and wear long johns it is fine.

The northern lights have been out. On Saturday night, Willie and I and neighbours Lindsay and Jeremy stood outside starring into the sky. It was a sight I wish you all could see. The lights were out in the most beautiful green and blue colours. They were dancing together throughout the sky. As the temperature gets lower, I guess we will see more colours and more action in the sky. Cannot wait.

Miss you all lots...

Tuk's Community Freezer
Buried deep within the perma frost, this freezer cost nothing, and holds food frozen for months on end. Everyone has their own door to hold food.
Travel down a large ladder into the Perma Frost. Can you imagine digging this hole!

Tuktoyaktuk
Located on the Beaufort Sea, is surrounded by the greatest concentration of natural Pingos. What are Pingos?? They are cone-shaped hills that form by a build up of ice under the tundra. Tuk is known as a transport harbour as it is situated on the artic ocean.

This is Tuk from the Plane. Only about 1010 people living in the area. Tuk is unique as there is no transporation via land except in the winter. So the only way to get there is via Airplane. Starting at Freeze-up, the winter road is put in. This is the ice road, made of pure ice, yes like a skating rink.
